The Scientific Method v Practitioner Research

In the dissertation module (and action research) we ask you to consider the methodology you are using to create knowledge of the world of Education. In the Dissertation this should be about 3000 words and with the outline of the procedures (another 3000) this is an important part of your masters award. Its important that a. You show your understanding of the source and nature of your knowledge, b. Distinguish it from other sorts of knowledge c. Can justify it to others and d. Continue to be enthused about creating (evolving) knowledge like this.

Scientific Method and Practitioner Research

Last week I outlined my thoughts about "Practitioner Research" Methodology, which I suggested formed a mid point between "Research" and "Practice", sharing aspects of both.

Research purposes include:

  • To record facts about the world
  • To explore explanations and decide upon their truthfulness
  • To add detailed descriptions

To follow this I suggest follow up material:

BBC Radio 4 Podcast "The Scientific Method" http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/in-our-time/podcasts/

Wickipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method

I suggest you contrast this material with what you are doing as a "practitioner and  researcher".

I propose that you will agree with some aspects and disagree with others about what you are doing

I suggest that you will lean more towards, for example,

  • Description, and observation
  • Practice and ends achieved
  • Collaborative, stakeholder involvement and consensus
  • Ethical procedures that maximize positive effect for the majority
  • Professional judgement on time limited evidence, and,
  • Professional processes of tests for truth and falsification (i.e. face value, ecological validity, )
  • The importance of the single case and the individual context
  • The importance of "approximate truths" and fuzzy kinds of generalization to other contexts.

Earlier helpful text is found  here on which to base your account of what you are doing in your research

and specifically here

(NB Modules other than Action Enquiry and Dissertation tend to focus upon procedures and not these issues)
