I am Sue Nolan your Librarian for Education. If you need any help with Education e-Resources provided by Middlesex University please contact me. On the Library Subject Guide for Education you will find information about our databases, online journals, useful weblinks and tips for searching. There is also information on how to log onto these e-Resources. I am also the subject librarian for film, television and journalism and I have a background in the history of art and fine art. My normal work pattern is Tuesday-Friday.

Accessing e-resources from home

To ensure that you can access our electronic resources (e-journals and e-books) off site, you MUST log into MyUniHub and go to My Study and then the My Library box.  Only when you then click the links in the My Library box, can you access the e-resources without an additional log in.

This is a new system and we have had some glitches, particularly with e-books access. There is some very useful information for students in the Work Based Learning guide on the Accessing e-resources page: http://libguides.mdx.ac.uk/content.php?pid=217011&sid=1889443.  Please read this if you get stuck.

Hi Sue, thanks for your time. I have a query about books that are marked '7 day loan'. Whilst I understand the need for well referenced books to be available to all, it has already caused me a little difficulty as I only attend the Trent Park site about once a month. I am interested in a few particular books that the university seem to have plenty of copies of and i was wondering if maybe a few could be made available for longer loan periods to accomodate us 'close to home but distant' learners. Regards, Amir Nathan.

Longer Loans

Posted by Sue Nolan at Nov 01, 2011 04:50 PM
Hi Amir, Books are given a 7 day loan status if they are on a reading list, books which are not required reading are given a longer period such as 28 or 14 days. As long as the book is not required by another reader, you can renew the book for up to 50 times. You can renew any books you have out online via the "My Account/Renewals" option on the Library Catalogue. Also whenever an electronic version of the book is available we will purchase a copy.If you can give me titles of the books I will see if ebooks are availble. Best wishes Sue

Hello Sue
As one of the online Tutors, with a Doctorate in eLearning Design I am happy to support the group as needed. Please do visit my website at http://abasiel.wordpress.com/
Now - here is a non-eLearning suggestion.
One of the best things to do is go to the British Library website
http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/inrrooms/readingrooms.html#
Go and get a Readers Card.
Plan a day when you can go to Kings Cross and loose yourself in the BL.
Trust me - this will be well worth it.
There is nothing more inspirational and you will find so much info.
(Plus there is a nice coffee shop).
yours

Hi Qaisra

If you go to the key link on this page entitled "Services for students at a distance" you can register as a distance learner and have books sent to your home.Middlesex Dissertations can only not be borrowed in this way, you will need to visit the campus to look at them.
The British Library can provide as a free download theses via ETHOS (Electronic Theses Online Serrvice). In order to search for titles you will need to register, details can be found at http://ethos.bl.uk. Best wishes.

Hi Sue,
I've found this hotseat to be extremely helpful and the online resources and ebooks have been very easy to access. I was wondering if the the first-year portfolios would be available in the office (L200) or in the library? Also, do I need to wait till I get my student card to visit the library in Trent Park?
Thank you for your time,

Liandra

Hi Emily

Trent Park Library is open from 11:00 - 4:00 on Saturday and open until 10 each evening. On Saturday it is self service only, so you will need your student card to borrow books. There are copies of both of those books available currently at Trent Park, books have either a 7day, 14 day or 28 day loan period and as long as they are not requested they can be renewed. If you are a Distance Learner you can register with this service and have books sent to you, forms for this can be found from the link below:

The Middlesex University library catalogue is useful for searching book titles/authors and finding out how long the loan period is. The catalogue can be accessed online at: http://library.mdx.ac.uk/

distance learning II

Posted by Willem van der Sluis at Nov 09, 2011 01:01 PM
Hi Sue,

as mentioned above, library books are more difficult to access for distance learning students. I got the Athens passport etc, but still I can't open many of the books I think are interested for my research. Journals idem dito. The PdF locks and deadlines are a frustration and unlock programs are still illegal? These books I can't print off, as I prefer to read from paper. Ordering library books it's too much time consuming and not practical for me because I travel a lot to different places in the world. Fellow international colleagues shared with me loads of books, but this is not a stable and the most up to date database. Are you aware of a kind of I-Tunes or Napstar, but then for books? Where users upload, download and share literature?

Your advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Willem

Hi Willem

Registering as a distance learner and having books sent by post is an option used by some students.
You will only be able to access ebooks and journals if these are sourced via Middlesex University's library catalogue and eresources pages, some students make the mistake of searching generally on the internet, finding an Athens login box and trying to access a resource that is part of another University's holdings. If you refer to the section "Accessing e-resources from home" in my introductory links at the top of this page this will give you guidance. If you are having problems with your Athens password you can either ring the Webhelpdesk on 020 8411 6060 or email them at Webhelpdesk@live.mdx.ac.uk.
I doubt if there will be a Napster for books due to copyright issues and I'm not aware of any.
Have you looked at our ebook collection on our library pages?, there are a number of titles on Education

Sue, I am also very much interested in the Journals and some books relating to " How children with Specific Learning difficulties (SpLD) are assessed and supported during lessons. Since I am unable to log-in to your e-library system, which of the resources that you have in stock would you recommend to borrow?

Library resources

Posted by Tarek Zoubir at Nov 09, 2011 04:36 PM
Sue am I right in suggesting to Mathew that he can still search the library catalogue for books and journals (without logging in) from http://library.mdx.ac.uk/ and also the summon search engine http://www.lr.mdx.ac.uk/summon/index.htm

Library resources

Posted by Sue Nolan at Nov 09, 2011 05:08 PM
Dear Tarek and Matthew

You can search the library catalogue without logging in, however if there is a link to an ebook or ejournal you will need your IT user ID and password to access these. You can also make an inital search on Summon, but, if there are links to articles in journals your IT user ID and password is required.

Students can also access our resources via myUnihub, the new student portal (using their ID user ID and password. MyUnihub contains details on a student's modules, timetables and university email. Library resources can be found in "My Library" on the "My Study" page.
Best wishes

Library resources

Posted by Sue Nolan at Nov 09, 2011 04:54 PM
Hi Matthew
There are a couple of books that might might be appropriate
Identifying and supporting children with specific learning difficulties..by Christine MacIntyre and Specific learning difficulties by Amanda Kirby(This book is at our Archway Campus and so you will need to request it). Try using the general keyword search on the library catalogue.

For journal articles, once you have had your password reset, have a look at Summon, the library Google, which searches all our resources in one go
http://unihub.mdx.ac.uk/[…]/index.aspx. There are couple of articles which might be of use.

Also if you register with TES, Times Educational Supplement, you can download teaching resources, be kept up to date on educational issues and they also have a SpLD booklet you can download http://www.tes.co.uk/[…]/

I hope this helps.

Best wishes
Sue

ejournals

Hi. I'm trying to read ejournals. It asks me to log in onto Sage premiere online when I already have. I seem to remember someone saying that you only need to log in once. I am just practising trying to read journals online. Please can you give me some advice? I wonder whether I am going in by the wrong route... Thanks.
Cathy.

Posted by Sue Nolan at Nov 10, 2011 12:48 PM
Hi Cathy

You should only need to login once, however there have been a few gliches in the system. If you look at the section "Accessing e-resources from home" on my hotseat introduction page above that will give you guidance. Any further problems please give details of the journal you are trying to access. We can only access journal titles and articles that Middlesex subscribe to and these have to be accessed through our website.
Best wishes
