Welcome to the hot seat:

This is an area for us to develop an active and deeper awareness of the learning resources available.

Copied here is a question from 2009 that many of us may relate to:

"Dear Gill,

I live abroad at the moment and I found that many of the resources (books) are unavailbe to me because of this, in fact since I started the course last I have not been able to access anything from the library. Do you have any ebooks that are relevant to my research (action research) if so how do I get hold of them? Can I borrow them online, how does it work?"

If you have a question, or contribution regarding learning resources, then please click the 'add comment' tab and get involved.

I look forward to working with you.

• Photocopies from the British library can be sent direct to your home.

• Books from both can be collected from any of our campuses.

Is ther anythingh that stops you.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Maired,

Unfortunately, MU does not subscribe to every journal listed on all the databases, or has a subscription that covers the complete run of a some journal titles.

Try using Summon, our new search engine, it allows you to search various library resources simultaneously, you should get access to full-text articles.(http://www.lr.mdx.ac.uk/summon/index.htm)

If you find that you need an article from a journal that MU does not subscribe to, you can send for it via our Inter Library Loan (ILL) scheme. (http://www.lr.mdx.ac.uk/dlsu/journals2.htm#notheld)

Can you give me a selection of titles that you cannot access. I will double check if we have access or not.

If you have any further problems, please email me (http://libguides.mdx.ac.uk/education).

Best wishes

Hi all,

Just thought to mention how useful EBSCOHOST is. The database has a number of journals including the British Educational Research Journal, Education Research Complete, Action Research and many other journals. These are really useful. I find they help me to follow my own leads because there is so much information that can be linked to recommended resources. Do share with us any valuable ways of searching for information. Thanks!

Dear Rebecca,

I have checked your library login, and it works. Student Number and Date of Birth. However, if you are trying to log onto a database, you will need your "It user ID" (found on the back of your student card), and your "password". You can obtain a password via the Web Helpdesk.(http://webhelpdesk.mdx.ac.uk/). When you try to log on, make sure you have set up your institutional cookie. Have a look at page five on the handout for Education Research Complete.(http://libguides.mdx.ac.uk/[…]hp?pid=58962&sid=433415).

If you need further help, please email me.

Dear Mihaela,

If you are trying to log onto the library catalogue to make a book reservation or check your record, you are using the right login. Student Number: capital M and all the digits (M12345678). Password date of birth six digits. I've check our library database, and you do not seem to have been registered with the library. You need to get this done via the Distance Learning Support Unit (DLSU). Email me if you are still having problems.

Hi Monica, I am having a similar problem to some of the other people that have commented. I was a student at Middlesex previously but when I go into the library catalogue to request books I am told that I cannot because my card has been inactivated on misis and that I am no longer on the course and I am not quite sure what to do.

Dear Marina,

You need to contact the Distance Learning Support Unit. (http://www.lr.mdx.ac.uk/dlsu/contact.htm) It seems to me that your re-registration with the University has not been completed.

logging in Athens

Posted by Christiana Kefala at Jan 25, 2011 09:18 PM
Hello. I have two questions:
Firstly, every time i try to log into Athens i get a wrong password message. And every time i have to e mail the web helpdesk to send me another password. This can sometimes be frustrating as you've found papers you want to read and need to wait for a day or two! I make sure i type the correct password by copy pasting it from the helpdesk mail so it's definately not me typing it wrongly. Every how often do i have to renew/request my passwords?

Also, being in a different country, i obviously cant pick up journals, could i get them emailed rather than mailed to me?

Thanks
Christiana

logging in Athens

Posted by Monica Johnson at Jan 27, 2011 06:08 PM
Dear Christina,

Password problems: when log in make sure you have set up your institutional cookie (see handout for Education Research Complete - (http://libguides.mdx.ac.uk/[…]hp?pid=58962&sid=433415).

If you log in more than three times, you will be locked out of the database. But the Web Helpdesk should be able to unlock your account. Instead of getting another password. You should only need one password, unless your forget what it is. Copy and pasting passwords, as far as I know do not work.

I have passed on your second question to the Distance Learning Support Unit, so I'll get back to you on this question.

Best wishes
Monica

I ve got a few questions. First, how can i have the resources delivered to my home address? Secondly, how and where can I search for journals? and how long can i keep them for? and finally, how to access electronic resources?

Thank you

Hello Monica

Posted by Monica Johnson at Feb 03, 2011 11:37 AM
Dear Magdalena,

If you need items sent to your home address, you will need to register with the DLSU (http://www.lr.mdx.ac.uk/dlsu/index.htm).

You can search for journal articles using our e-Resources (http://www.lr.mdx.ac.uk/lib/eresources/index.htm). Try using Summon; it searches both e-resources, and the library catalogue.

The main database for education students, is Education Research Complete. Have a look at the Library Subject Guide for Education, you will find a handout that will give you step-by-step instructions on how to access this database. (http://libguides.mdx.ac.uk/content.php?hs=a&pid=58962)

I am using the same email address and password that I used to create my webhelpdesk acct but I am getting an invalid username/password message. I have also tried my student no and birthdate and that doesn't seem to work either. Please can you point me in the right direction.

Many thanks,

Hi,
Thank you for your help, although, I am still having difficulty. I am using my IT user ID and the my birthdate as the password. I have requested a password through the help desk and I was directed back to my user profile page which points to my birthdate to be used for security. Really unsure!
